Tips for Keeping Your Dentures Fresh and Clean

The way we clean our natural teeth, one should be cleaning them at least twice a day. So stick to a schedule of cleaning them in the morning before putting them in and in the evening before bed.  Make sure to clear them carefully because if you drop them they will break.

Brush Your Dentures Daily: Brush them, just like your teeth. The only difference between dentures and original teeth is you take dentures out to clean them. Brushing removes food, plaque and bacteria. You also need to remove the adhesives that you use to keep them in, because denture adhesive can irritate your gums. Use a soft brush so you don’t damage the denture material, and ask your dentist what cleaner he or she recommends. Also, brush your gums as well to remove plaque.

Soak dentures overnight: Most types of dentures need to remain moist in order to keep their shape. Place the dentures in water or a denture-soaking solution overnight. Ask your dentist about the best way to store your dentures overnight. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on cleaning and soaking solutions.

Look After Your Gums:  Even if you have complete dentures, you still need to care for your gums. Whenever you take out dentures, give your mouth a good rinse and then massage your dentures with a soft toothbrush. Even if you have  partial dentures, you still need to properly brush every day.

Remove and rinse dentures after having meal: Run water over your dentures to remove food debris and other loose particles. For washing it safely place a towel on the counter or in the sink or put some water in the sink so the dentures won't break if you drop them.

By keeping a dentures clean, you help keep your gums and teeth healthy and avoid bad breath. People who wear dentures sometimes get an infection. Good denture hygiene is important for preventing oral problems.

  2. You made a great point about how important it is to still take care of my gums even if I wear complete dentures. It seems like that would be important to make wearing them more comfortable in my mouth. I'm considering dentures to replace my teeth, so I'll make sure to rinse my mouth every day, along with brushing and soaking my dentures. Thanks for the tips!
